The Baptismal Register of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Crathorne 1777 to 1839

I obtained a copy of St Mary's baptismal register while researching my book on Hutton Rudby in the time of the cholera.  My transcription follows below - please check against the original before relying on it.

The baptismal register book for St Mary’s, Crathorne is held at the National Archive (Public Record Office) at Kew and covers the period 1777 to 1839.

During this time Parliament restored civil rights to Catholics in a series of Relief Acts beginning in 1778 and culminating in 1829 with the Catholic Emancipation Act.

The register begins with an introduction by Thomas Ferby:
“A Baptismal Book belonging Crathorne [sic] in which an account is kept of the children that have been baptized by me Thos Ferby Eng.h Miss. since Novr 1st 1777”

Thomas Ferby’s successors were:
14 Sep 1794     Thomas Taylor
23 Aug 1798     Jos. Maini (entries in Latin)
with no resident missioner from the beginning of 1804 and the chapel served from Stockton, entries were made by Thomas Story
27 Jun 1816     George Corless (entries in Latin)
from June 1832     Henry Greenhalgh, with one entry in Feb 1833 by Rev Dom Nic Rigby
from Sep 1836    A. Macartney
from May 1837    H. Irving

After July 1839 there was no incumbent and on 26 Oct 1840 the Rev Joseph Dugdale of Stockton-on-Tees sent the Register Book to the Commissioners for inquiring into the State, Custody, and Authenticity of Non-parochial Registers.

The entries vary in the information they provide.  Thomas Ferby generally gave details of where the parents and godparents lived, and whether a parent was a Protestant.  Joseph Maini provided the mother’s maiden name.  There are one or two entries where I suspect a clerical error.

There are 292 baptisms listed.  For 2 baptisms, no surname is recorded.  The children were born to 95 identifiable married couples, 3 unmarried couples and to 4 single women (father’s name not recorded).
Of the married couples, 43 of the 95 were mixed marriages.  (If it is assumed that godparents were always Catholic, at least three of the non-Catholic spouses later converted to Catholicism.)

In the last two months of 1777 to the end of 1780 there were 28 baptisms.  In that year, attendance at Mass was 88 [Peter Markey’s History of the Church]:-

1777 to 1780    28 baptisms
1781 to 1790    59
1791 to 1800    74
1801 to 1810    46
1811 to 1820    23        (the present chapel dates from around 1819)
1821 to 1830    35
1831 to 1839    27

It appears from the Register that the last decade of the 18th century produced the most baptisms.  Many of the children then baptised did not return in due course with their own children for baptism; many may no longer have been in the area, with the decline of the linen industry.

Several surnames occur throughout the 62 years covered by the Register:-

Chapman   of    Crathorne
Fawcett            Crathorne (and one couple of Swainby)
Grainge             Crathorne
Meynell            Crathorne and Hutton Rudby
Sherwood         Ayton
Welford             Crathorne

The godparents’ names reflect the wider community.

The Register Book often records the place of abode of parents and godparents, and it can be seen that they came from a wide area around Crathorne:

from Appleton Wiske: the Aldersons, Halls, Tates, Duckbournes and Meynells
from Ayton: the Sherwoods, Bathgates and Wheatmans
from Carlton: the Applebys, Pickerings, Clarkes and Nichols
from Faceby: Jane Neasome
from Hutton Rudby: the inter-related Meynells, Bewicks, Bainbridges and Smiths, together with the Browns, Tates, Youngs, Harpleys, and Jacksons
from Kirby: the Wrightsons and Fenwicks
from Middleton-upon-Leven: the Woods
from Swainby: the Scafes and Fawcetts
from Stokesley: the Hazards and possibly the Hebdens
from West Rounton: the Hunters and Tipladys
from Worsall:  Mrs Waiton
from Yarm:  the Todds.

Reuben Green of Sheffield and the Smiths of Beverley had children baptised at Crathorne.

Many of these people are mentioned only once and we have no way of knowing how long they lived in these parts – for example, I have come across no other reference to the Browns, Tates, Youngs and Harpleys of Hutton Rudby or the Woods of Middleton.

The Register includes a list of the 30 candidates for confirmation by Bishop Penswick at Crathorne on 22 June 1833.
The fact that the baptisms of only 5 of the children are recorded at Crathorne – several of the candidates appear to be adults – suggests again a Catholic population which is not reflected in the Register.

Of the 30 candidates, there were

from Ayton:  3 candidates (Portous, Sherwood and Wheatman)
from East Rounton:  1 candidate (Moor)
from Hutton Rudby:  5 children (Bainbridge, Hansell and Hood – their mothers were Meynells)
from Ingleby Cross:  1 candidate (Kaye)
from Osmotherley:  2 candidates (Clarke and McVay)
from Picton:  8 people in two familes (Rowles, including the parents, and Wood)
from Potto:  2 candidates (Liger)
Of the remaining 8, 6 were from Crathorne (Chapman, Kendrew, Martin, Morgan and Welford) and 2 have no address given (Grainge and Fairham).

From 1839 there was no resident missioner, and Crathorne was served from Stockton.  When a priest was appointed in 1860 for Stokesley, the chapels at Crathorne and Osmotherley were in his care.  In 1865 a Visitation showed a congregation of 100 at Stokesley, 60 at Osmotherley and only 6 at Crathorne.  [Peter Markey’s History of the chapel]

The Catholic population of Crathorne will have been affected not only by the enormous social and economic changes of the times, but also by the fortunes of the Crathorne estate.
In 1828 the New Yorkshire Gazetteer recorded of Crathorne,
“Here is the seat of G.T.Crathorne, Esq., whose family has been resident here from time immemorial.”
The Crathornes were a recusant family and suffered accordingly during the penal years.  By the end of the 18th century they were facing increasing financial difficulties, and finally after the death in 1844 of Mrs Maria Tasburgh (only child of George Tasburgh Crathorne) the estate was sold.  The purchasers were the Dugdale family of Burnley, whose wealth came from cotton manufacture.
In this way the Crathorne estate finally passed out of Catholic hands.
