Saturday January 1
To office.  At night walked with Steele to H.E. Clark’s to tea (the last time as a bachelor) as he is to be married on Wednesday.  Jacob Smith & Thos Lund were there    played cards.  Steele was called away   I got home a little before 12

Sunday January 2
Twice to BB Church   Joe spent the day with us   Sarah was in York.  He & I walked to Kirby Hill Church in the afternoon.  LW Sedgwicks child was christened in the evening

Monday January 3
To office.  A Noon Had a walk with Capes   At Night went with Miss Stott, Steele & EC Clark in Stotts phaeton to Clarks of Minskip to tea   Miss Calder   The Misses Appleton & Miss McCleod were there   Had a good dance   John Clark drove the Sedgwicks & Alice & Lizzy & me home   got home about 12

Tuesday January 4
To office   At Noon rode Joes mare to Sugar Hills near Givendale to see some coursing  Had some pretty fair sport   At Night was about home

Wednesday January 5
To office  At Night went to Capes’s   stayed supper

To office   Spent the evening at Joes

To office   At Night went to supper at Mrs Parkers at Langthorp   played Bagatelle

Sunday January 9
Twice to BB Church.  Kept House in the afternoon.  Supped with Charlesworth at Bainbridges

Monday January 10
To office.  At Noon walked to Aldbro to order some rose trees for Mrs Workman   In the afternoon Drove Mrs Hutchinson (who was staying at Uncles) & Dora in Uncles Dog Cart to Skelton  called at the Squires & from there to Dishforth to call at Mrs Richardsons.  At Night went to Joes.  Had tea at Uncles

Tuesday January 11
To office.  At Night went to Joes & packed up my clothes to go to Almholme

Wednesday January 12
Left by the 8 o’clock train for Almholme.     Had luncheon at Mr Sedgwicks in York      Richd Sedgwick met me at the station      Left York at 12.15  arrived at Arksey Station at 2       Mr Workman & Robt Hewitt met me in the Dog Cart     Drove to Almholme     Had dinner   Mr & Mrs W.   Robt & Hy Hewitt & I started about 4 to Doncaster.  Had tea at Wm Hewitts   got dressed & went to a grand Xmas Ball at the Mansion House    there were about 200 there   Mr & Mrs Fox were Mayor & Mayoress   We had 28 dances.  I danced 22 of them.  We had supper at 12    I took in a Miss Nicholson  one of the belles of the party   We danced till after 3 & a most jolly evening I had.  When I went at first I did not know a soul except the Workmans & the Hewitts   Robt & I went home with a Mrs Walker & her sister & Miss Addy of Arksey who was staying with Mrs Walker & had some coffee &c     we then started home & got into bed just at seven o’clock
[Robert & Margaret Workman farmed in Almholme.  Their nephews and niece, Robert, Catherine Worrill and Henry Hewitt, all b Skellow, lived with them.
Pigotts 1834:  “The mansion house, which is a superb building, is a great ornament to this handsome street; the foundation was laid in the year 1744:  in 1800 it was repaired and an attic raised above the columns to screen the roof.......the concerts and balls, during the races and at other times are held in it”]


Thursday January 13
Up at 9   Robt & I went out shooting   shot 2 hares & a partridge   At night played at Cards

Friday January 14
Robt & I went to Ouston to shoot rabbits & good sport we had  we shot 29   Mr Workman came for us at 3 o’clock.  We went to Doncaster   Had tea at Wm Hewitts    After tea Mr Geaves came in & would have Wm  Robt & me go down to his house    He has a very nice daughter & he had 2 Miss Hinds staying with them (very jolly girls)   We had tea there & then we went to a juvenile party to the Mansion House   Lots of people were there   we had dancing & a Magic Lantern.  I took Mrs Walker to supper & a very jolly evening we spent  we got to Almholme about 3

Saturday January 15
Robt & I drove to Brodsworth Hall to shoot pheasants.  A Mr Barker was there.  We shot 17 pheasants  3 hares  a woodcock & a rabbit.  We dined with Mr Gilbert at the Hall at 5 o’clock   champagne &c &c   & after dinner we had coffee & we got home about ten  after a very good day’s sport

Sunday January 16
Cousin Margt  Kate  Robt & I drove to Arksey Church in the morning   I was introduced to Mr & Mrs Skelton.  In the afternoon Mrs & Mr Workman   Robt & I drove to Doncaster   Had tea at Wm Hewitts & went to the new Church which is a most splendid building.  We then drove home   We left Mr W at Doncaster as he was going to start very early in the morning for London

Monday January 17
Robt Hewitt rode the grey horse & I rode Jenny to the Brand & thro Sprotbro & on to Doncaster & home.  Went out shooting a bit   Mr Mather a vety surgeon of Doncaster came on to tea   played cards   At 9 o’clock  Robt & I drove to Doncaster to meet Mr Workman coming from London

Tuesday January 18
Robt rode the grey horse   I rode Nancy hunting   they met at Ampole Inn & a very nice days sport we had   we got home about 5  played cards in the evening  
Lady Cook was hunting all day

Wednesday January 19
Mr Workman & drove to the Brand where we had some porter  saw the Stock there & then returned   In the afternoon Robt & I were dodging about   At Night we had a grand party at Almholme   the Mayor & Mayoress &c &c   we played cards   champagne supper & a jolly do we had   they left about two

Thursday January 20
Young Chadwick of Arksey had breakfast with us & he  Robt & I set off to Park Lane hunting & called at John Newsomes on our way   we had a very nice run & we left them about 3 near the Race Course at Doncaster    we got home about 4     Had dinner & then Robt  Mary Ann Hewitt  Kate & I drove in the Dog Cart to Mrs Walker’s of Doncaster where we had tea & supper & played cards & spent a very pleasant evening     we left about eleven.  Mary Ann stayed at Doncaster & Robt  Kate & I drove home

Friday January 21
Robt & I walked for the newspaper to Arksey    went out shooting a bit   Had dinner & Mr & Mrs Workman drove down with me to Arksey Station to come home   Mr W  went on to the Brand   Cousin Margt stayed with me at the station.  I just caught sight of Kate coming to meet her Aunt as I got into the train.  Went to Park Place to tea & got home to supper  After supper I went to Uncle Hirsts for an hour   Joe & Sarah were there & thus ended a visit which was indeed a jolly one

Saturday January 22
To office.  At Night went to Capes to tea. it was Hawksley’s birthday   Uncle Redmayne came to Leond Sedgwicks for a day or two

Sunday January 23
Twice to BB Church   once to Aldbro.  Uncle Redmayne had tea with us

Monday January 24
Had a newspaper from Robt Hewitt contg an acct of the juvenile party at the Mansion House last Friday week.  To office.  Spent the evening at Uncle Hirsts

Tuesday January 25
To office.  At Night read law at the office

Wednesday January 26
To office.  At Noon walked nearly to Langthorp with Joe.  Started about 4 on Uncle Hirsts pony on business to Miles Rainforths   Had tea there,  then rode on to Mrs Heslingtons of Marton le Moor  got home about 9    Had a very wet ride

Saturday February 5
To office.  At Night walked to Ouseburn to spend tomorrow at Aunt Pick’s.  Bainbridge set me to the Bar.  Miss Paver & Richard & Tom Johnson were there  we played cards

Sunday February 6
It being the first Sunday in the month no morning service at Ouseburn   Uncle & I went to Gt Ouseburn Church in the afternoon & evening   Chas Atkinson called in the afternoon.  I went in with Tom Johnson to Uncle Wms after church at night

Monday February 7
Had breakfast   walked home.  At night went to Leond Sedgwicks & from there to Joes

Tuesday February 8
To office  At Night went to a Concert at the school room   Miss Senior was the only Lady Singer.  It was got up by Mr Ingram.  Uncle Hirst gave me my ticket.  It was a pretty fair concert     Steele sang

Wednesday February 9
To office.  At Night walked down to Ellenthorp Hall with a note asking the Clarks to our house to meet Heaton Edwin Clark & his bride on Tuesday next.  Mrs Millar was there   we played whist   I got home soon after ten

Thursday February 10
To office.  At Night went to tea at LW Sedgwicks to meet Mr & Mrs Edwin Clark.  We danced & had a very merry party about 21 or 22 there   we got home about midnight

Friday February 11
To office.  At night Bainbridge & I went in Morrells Dog Cart to Humburton to meet the bride & groom (HE Clark & wife)  Had a large party   Had a good dance & a very pleasant evening.  Charlesworth rode home with us   Got home about 2

Saturday February 12
To office   At Night went to call at Miss Stotts   Charlesworth & Bainbridge came in

Sunday February 13
Mg & evg to BB Church  In the afternoon to Kirby Hill Church   Stayed tea at Joes & brought Sarah down to BB Church   Set her home after Church

To office   At Night went to meet HE Clark & his wife at Miss Stotts   Played Cards   Miss Ruth Stott & I played Capes & Mrs Powell   Got home about 12

Tuesday February 15
To office.  At Noon called at Sedgwicks where I stayed dinner   at Night we had a party to meet HE Clark & his wife   Played Cards   they left about 12

Walked home from Ouseburn.  At Noon went over to Joes.  At Night Capes  Joe & I went to the Greyhounds to the sale of Charltons land  when Capes bot same for Mr Owen for £640

Tuesday March 22
To office.  At Night went to a spread to Mrs Powells   Two Miss Smiths of Burton   Charlesworth  Miss R Stott   Steele  Capes & I were there     we played cards    got home about ½ past eleven

To office.  Annie Sedgwick was buried today.  At Night   Charlesworth  Bainbridge & I walked to Norton   called on the old Folks & then on the Young Folks   Had a rubber with the young people   T Lund & Leond Sampson were there   we got home about ten

Twice to BB Church & once to Kirby Hill.  Had tea at Joes.  Ryotts Governess & Lizzie Ryott came to BB Church in the evening

Monday May 2
Went to office early.  Started by 8 train to catch the north train & from there to Northallerton    Had lunch at Jefferson’s   finished my business about ½ past 12   Walked to Sober Hill   Had dinner   Tom Scholfield & I  went ferreting    got 52 rabbits & I rat   Had tea with him & he drove me to Otterington Station    Supped at Uncles

Tuesday May 3
To office   Walked with Uncle on business to Mrs Fletchers of Minskip   In the afternoon rode Harry to Ripon on business    got home about tea time    after tea Capes  Joe & I walked up the river side   went to supper at Mrs Parkers of Langthorp with Rd Hirst .  he stayed all night with me

Wednesday May 4
To office   At Noon read law   At night at Uncle Hirsts to meet H.E.Clark & wife  Capes was there

To office   At Noon read law   Dined at Uncles & had tea & supper there with Joe & Sarah  Capes & wife & Aunt Bell   Joe Capes & I walked up Minskip beck

To office.  At Night went to Stotts to tea   Miss & Miss Jane Walburn & Rd W.  Miss Kyme & Miss Eliza Kyme were there   we went out into a field & played Tessey & after that we had a polka in the house   Had a very pleasant evening   got home about ½ past ten

Twice to BB Church.  Went with Rd Hirst to Kirby Hill Church in the afternoon

Read law.  To office.  At noon read law   At night Capes Joe & I walked up the river side

To office.  At night went with Capes to H.E.Clarks to tea to meet the usual rook shooting party  Had a very pleasant eveng  Joe Capes  Charlesworth & I walked home together   we arrived at ½ past 12

To office.  Dined with Bainbridge.  At 2 o’clock went down to the Hall to shoot rooks   left about 5 o’clock  Had very good sport.  Capes  Joe & I went down to Humburton to tea & shot the rooks   Charlesworth & Steele came home with us.  Got home about one after a very pleasant evening

To office.  At Noon Steele Capes Joe & I went to Chr Lofthouses stable to see a corpse which was found in the Canal.  At night went to Aldbro  Had a walk with Capes

Sunday May 15
Went to BB Church in the mg.  At one o’clock drove Uncle Hirsts Dog Cart to Northallerton
on business   Called to see Jim & Mary Sedgwick   Had tea at Northallerton  Got to Dishforth about 8   Stayed till about ½ past nine & then drove home

Monday May 16
To office   Had dinner & tea with Dora    Uncle & Sophy were from home.  At night Joe & I had a walk up the river side

Tuesday May 17
To office.  At noon read law    At night walked up thro Mr Crows Yard & on to Grafton Lane  Read law

Wednesday May 18
Read law   To office  Had tea with Charlesworth at ½ past 4   Went by train to Brafferton School opening where there was a tea & concert    Steele & Co sang   We had a very pleasant evg    I stayed all night at Roger Buttery’s

Came home by train from Helperby.  To office   at noon read law.  In the afternoon Capes Joe & I were ferretting with Poulter at the Mill    At night I rode to Ouseburn  but the good people there had gone to a missionary meeting so I did not see them

To office   At Noon read law  At Night walked to Ellinthorp Lodge    Mr & Mrs Clark & Mr & Mrs Price (Mrs Clark’s sister) were there   The Hall people walked with me as far as the Hall on my way home

To office.  About ½ past one  Steele   Rd Hirst  & I drove to Starbeck & took train to Bradford where we were joined by Hy Redmayne  We all went to St George’s Hall to hear a grand concert it being the biennial festival  we heard Mademoiselle Tifiens, Clara Novello, Diaddil   Sims Reeves  Giulini &c &c a splendid chorus & everything passed off well   Hy set us to the station & we caught a train for Leeds about eleven where we stayed all night at a Lodging House

Hy went back to Bradford this morning   I went with Uncle & Thos Stackhouse to Austwick Wood to shoot       Mr Foster   Mr Ingleby   John Ingleby   Robt Hargraves   Thos Clapham Joe Birkbeck   Thos Stackhouse   John Hartley   Uncle & I were there.  We shot 46 hares  17 pheasants & 18 rabbits    We all dined at Thos Claphams at 7 o’clock         I rode home with Thos Stackhouse  got home about 12

Tuesday October 11
Went down with Uncle & Thos Stackhouse to Settle  was there all day  dined & had tea at the Terrace   called with Fanny at Mrs Sweets

Left Taitlands about ½ past 7 to come home    got to Knaresbro about 12.  Had dinner at Kirks & rode home with Mr Heaton Clark   Went to the office  called at Leond Sedgwicks & went up to Capes’ in the evg

To office.  At night about home  Uncle Wm & Aunt came & had dinner with us

Rd Paver came to spend the day at Uncle Picks   Went to church at Gt Ouseburn in the morning   stayed at home the rest of the day

To office   Uncle Hirst & I walked to Grafton to hold the Court    after the Court Uncle came home & I stayed dinner & a very jolly party we had    I went with Jno Houseman & John Akers to tea at Hick’s   I got home about ½ past 7      went to sup at Joes

To office   Went by noon train to York on business   Had tea at Park Place & got home at ½ past 8

To office.  At night went with Steele & his sister & Miss Stott in their phaeton to Burtons of Minskip to tea   Mrs Trotter & Mr Musgrave Burton were there   Had a very pleasant evening indeed  Danced & played cards

To office.  At night read Equity at the office   Uncle Hirst went to London

To office   Went down to Helperby by the noon train on business.  I travelled with Mrs Trotter who left Mrs Burtons today.  Had dinner at Mr Roger Butterys    Richd Hirst returned with by the 3 o’clock train [sic]  At night read Equity

To office   Mr Capes & I drove to Knaresbro & purchd the practice of the late Mr Warwick Solr (for £300 to include the library & papers &c) who died the other day   Dined at Mr Waltons  (Mrs Warwick’s brother)  got home about 8 at night

Uncle Wm had a letter to say Miss Marriner was dead   Went to Ouseburn church in the morng & evening.  In the afternoon we had a short stroll   Tom Johnson supped with us

To office.  In the afternoon I went to Mr Holdsworths on business & from there to Minskip where I was detained some time    Had tea at Chr Clarkes    Joe  Capes  Steele Richd Hirst & I supped at Charlesworths   got home about ½ to 12    Rd Hirst slept with me.   Poor Crosby of Ouseburn died at Kings Cross Station Lonon either yesterday or today very suddenly

To office   Nelly Scholfield was married today  Capes & Jane were there  In the afternoon Mr Bland a P.O.Surveyor came  He & I went to Scotts of Broom Close to see about his having a free delivery   Had tea there  played cards & got home just at midnight

To office  In the afternoon Steele & I went round the town collecting money in order the BB Endowment fund raised. (If BB would raise £300, £900 more would be given by the Ecclesiastical Commers & the Longley Fund)  Had tea at Miss Stotts & supper at Uncles  Alice came home from Blackheath   Jane Capes stayed all night with us on her return from Miss N.Scholfields wedding

To office  Lizzie came home from Taitlands   She came to Knaresbro yesterday  Read law at the office at night  Uncle Wm & Aunt dined with us  Supped at Uncles
