[It appears from later entries that Jane (Mrs Charles) Stubbs and her family live in Cloudesley Square, N1, off the present day Liverpool Road, in Islington. It is shown amongst a series of terraces laid out with gardens in the fields around Islington on a map of 1831. Started about ½ past ten went to Grays Inn & saw George Capes went with him & was introduced to Mr Maugham the Secretary of the Incorporated Law Society went & saw Mr Wharton a barrister with whom I am going to read from there to 35 Queen St & found Tom Sedgwick who dined with me at Izants & then I returned to Grays Inn & back to Cloudesley Sqre Alice went to school Mr Thompson came up at night

Went to Grays Inn & from there to Serle St Lincolns Inn where I met 6 or 7 young gentn who were reading with Mr Wharton we had a lesson I dined at the Gray’s Inn Larder & then returned to 15 Cloudesley Sqre Mrs Chas went with me to seek some lodgings I had a good read at Stephens 1st vol in the evening

Studying the whole of the morning 1st vol of Stephens In the afternoon Willey went with me to Gray’s Inn from there to Westminster Abbey & then to the Houses of Parliament which we went over & with which I was very much pleased indeed they are most superb we then returned to tea Had another read. Mr Thompson came up at night

Went down to Mr Wharton went to search for judgments with one of Capes’ clerks knocking about with Mr Capes went to Tom Sedgwicks place we dined together at the Guildhall dining rooms I walked down to Kings Cross Station rather expecting to see Uncle Redmayne & Mary but they did not turn up. I went back to Cloudesley Sqre to tea Jane & Sophy went to Navestock I adjourned to my lodgings at Mrs Pirmiger’s 23 Upper Islington Terrace Willey went with me & we had a late tea. Wrote to Joes wife & to Smallwood

Studying at my lodgings till one then went & had dinner with Willey & Alice Stubbs. Wrote to our Alice. Studying at my lodgings the remr of the day with the exception of walking as far as the Angel & calling on Willey & Alice for a short time

Reading at home till 11 Went to the Library reading there till five when I went & had a steak with Heelis somewhere not far off I then smoked a pipe with him & we walked to the London Pavillion at the top of the Haymarket where we had some capital singing two of Heelis’ cousins were there I left at eleven & came by bus to the Angel

Took bus at Angel to Paddington & from there by train to Ealing to spend day at Mrs John Stubbs’ we went to the Old Church in the mg Mrs John Emily Charley & I set Mr Wills (who dined with us & who is Mrs Johns bro in law half way to Sedbury Had tea & sang some hymns I stayed supper & got home about ½ past 10 Kate Butcher was there a very nice girl but a lunatic An old lady was there also

Ashton called we called of Hoyle & Baker we went to The Hall of the Incorporated Law Society to undergo our first days examination we had a very nice address from Walton the Master of the Examiners we started Common Law & finished that branch & Conveyancing by 4 o’clock got thro very well examn easy Hoyle Ashton & I dined at Izants & then we walked round by Highbury Crescent & had tea at Ashtons I then came home took a book to Waughs & came back feeling very ill and fearfully fatigued both in mind & body

Took a bus at The Angel to Westminster & was sworn there & enrolled an Attorney in the Queens Bench Glover Stokes & I then came in a Hansom & we were enrolled in the Common Pleas and Exchequer I then got my hair cut & went to try on a Coat in Regent St came back & was enrolled a Solr of the High Co.t of Chancery Dined at Izants came home called at Janes Spent a most pleasant evg at Hoyle & Bakers rooms met Ashton Foster Stringer Rodgers & another played cards &c &c got home at 4 o’clock in the morning

Mary Redmayne & I walked from the review to Miss Sutcliffes Hy Redmayne & Mary set me to the train to come home
